"Cloudscape (16/45)" is a woodblock print from a limited edition of 45 impressions, depicting the sky as primary subject. Sawada Tetsuro treats clouds not as background elements but as the central focus, elevating atmospheric phenomena to the status usually reserved for mountains, temples, or human figures in Japanese printmaking. The woodblock medium presents unique challenges for rendering clouds, whose soft, billowing forms resist the hard edges that carved blocks naturally produce. Sawada likely exploits this tension, allowing the geometric character of woodblock printing to impose structure on inherently formless subjects.
