Description
This mokuhanga was produced for the International Mokuhanga Conference held in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture in 2024 — a triennial gathering hosted in a region long renowned for its [washi](/glossary/washi) production, including the [kozo](/glossary/kozo) papers favored by contemporary woodblock practitioners. As a submission piece, the work sits within the conference's tradition of soliciting prints from member artists that demonstrate technical command of the medium and contribute to ongoing dialogue between Japanese and international printmakers. Kawamura's contribution likely extends the maritime and memory-laden imagery that defines her practice — drawn from her father's upbringing in the Hokkaido port of Otaru — rendered through the layered [baren](/glossary/baren)-printed pigments and [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations characteristic of her larger compositions. As an Associate Member of the Japan Print Association since 2017 and a graduate of both Kyoto Seika and Tama Art universities, Kawamura belongs to a generation of mokuhanga artists working at the intersection of inherited technique and personal narrative, and her presence at IMC Echizen places her within the contemporary international community that the conference convenes around the medium.
