Description
Shizugatake, a mountain ridge in Shiga Prefecture famous for a pivotal 1583 battle between Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Shibata Katsuie, glows under the remnants of a fading sun. Sano renders the landscape in warm, diminishing light that transforms the ridgeline into layered bands of color bleeding from amber into deep violet. The 1996 oban woodblock print treats the sky as the true subject, compressing the land into a narrow strip while the afterglow fills the upper two-thirds of the composition. The historic site is presented not as a battlefield but as a place where light itself performs, and the title's kanji (賤ヶ岳残照) emphasizes the lingering quality of that radiance.
