Description
Nagahama, a town on the northeastern shore of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture, is seen at the hour when the sun drops behind the western mountains and the water turns molten. Sano's 1996 oban woodblock print stretches the sunset horizontally, with the lake surface serving as a mirror that doubles the sky's color gradient. The town itself appears as a low silhouette along the shoreline, its rooftops and structures compressed into a dark band between two expanses of warm light. The Japanese subtitle (長浜夕景) names the exact location and time of day, grounding the image in geographic specificity while the color treatment lifts it toward abstraction.
