Joshin (Goddess) paired with a record of the Kegon Sutra — one of the female divine figures in Munakata's 1937 Kegon series — brings the feminine sacred presence into his Buddhist cosmology. Joshin (a Japanese Buddhist term for a female divine being or goddess) represents one of the many sacred figures who populate the cosmic vision of the Avatamsaka Sutra. Munakata's female divinities occupied a space between his Buddhist sacred figures and his secular women: the goddess carried both the spiritual intensity of his Kannon images and the earthly presence of his secular female figures.
