"Kegon Kyo" — the Kegon Sutra itself, its title appearing as the print's subject — is a work in which the text and the image coincide: the sutra is not illustrated but invoked, its presence in the print as a title suggesting that Munakata understood the act of carving and printing as itself a form of sutra recitation. This 1937 print, with its direct naming of the sacred text, demonstrates the seriousness with which he engaged Buddhist philosophy — not as iconographic program but as living thought that shaped how he understood his own creative practice.
