"The Wife and Child (Tsumako no saku)" from the series "The Tale of the Auklet" (1938) brings the domestic and familial into the auklet narrative — the wife and child left behind when the bird/protagonist departs, or reunited at the journey's end. Munakata's domestic figures carried the same directness as his sacred ones: no sentimentality, no conventional prettiness, but the actual weight of a woman and a child in relation to each other, their bond rendered through the physical facts of posture and proximity.
