Description
This 1832 V&A print shows Arashi Rikan II in the role of Ningyoya Koemon, a doll-shop proprietor character from a 1832 Osaka kabuki production. The "Ningyoya" name ("doll shop") established the character's occupation, and the role would have allowed Rikan II to demonstrate the merchant-class portrayal that distinguished Osaka kabuki from the more samurai-focused Edo repertoire. Sewamono (domestic dramas) set in the Osaka commercial world were a major Kamigata speciality, and Hokuei documented them extensively through Rikan II and the other leading Osaka stars. The print shows Rikan II in the distinctive Osaka merchant costume, with the apron-like maekake and the working clothes that distinguished the character from the more elaborate period-piece roles. The composition is in Hokuei's mature half-length format, with the actor's familiar facial features and the bold registration that defined the artist's premium-quality work. The V&A's holding preserves an impression with good color and clear keyblock outline.
