Description
This 1832 V&A print shows Arashi Rikan III in the role of Danshichi Kurobei, the same iconic Kamigata role that Rikan II had performed several years earlier and that Hokuei had documented at the Cleveland Museum of Art impression. The succession from Rikan II to Rikan III within the Arashi acting lineage is one of the important moments in Kamigata theatrical history of the period, and Hokuei's documentation of both actors in the signature Danshichi role provides essential comparison material for understanding the transmission of the part across generations. Rikan III maintained the tattooed-body convention and the half-bared upper-body presentation associated with the role, but presumably brought his own performance choices to the gestural details and facial expression that Hokuei captures here. The print is a key document of stage-name succession in 1830s Osaka kabuki and of the artistic continuity that allowed iconic roles to persist across multiple actors and decades within a single family lineage.
