$500–$4,000. Common subjects: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: As an early sosaku-hanga pioneer, Kawakami's prints have historical significance. His distinctive graphic style is collected.
"Arrival of Portuguese Ship," dated Showa period 1952, depicts one of Kawakami's most beloved recurring themes: the arrival of the great Portuguese nao (trading ships) at Nagasaki in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, the moment when European trade and Christianity first came to Japan in sustained form. These massive black ships with their towering sails, carrying Portuguese merchants, Jesuit missionaries, and the exotic goods of global trade, fascinated Kawakami as emblems of contact and change. His simplified style gives the ship a fairy-tale grandeur.
