Description
A Mirror Stand — The Autumn Moon (Kyodai no shugetsu), from Eight Indoor Scenes (Zashiki Hakkei), documented on ukiyo-e.org from an Art Institute of Chicago impression, exemplifies Suzuki Harunobu's witty domestication of classical landscape tropes. The Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers, a Chinese poetic and pictorial cycle, had been imported and reworked in Japan for centuries; in Zashiki Hakkei Harunobu transposes its scenic categories — autumn moon, evening bell, returning sails — onto eight everyday interior objects observed inside the women's quarters. Here the round, polished surface of a mirror on its lacquered stand becomes the autumn moon. Two young women in the spare, soft-toned manner of Harunobu's Edo bijin-ga interact with the object as if domesticating a celestial body. The composition relies on the careful color registration of nishiki-e, with subtle gradations of pink, blue, and ground tone that demand the precision of the polychrome workshops Suzuki Harunobu's success had helped consolidate. The series flattered cultivated viewers who could recognize the classical reference while enjoying the wit of seeing a scenic ideal compressed into a single piece of household furniture. The ukiyo-e.org record drawn from the Art Institute's holdings preserves enough of the print's clarity that modern viewers can read both layers — landscape allusion and intimate genre scene — at once.
