Description
The Shakotan Peninsula on Hokkaido's western coast, famed for its dramatic cliff scenery and the deep cobalt of the Sea of Japan, gave Ono a natural subject as graphically compelling as any cityscape. The sheer coastal cliffs and open sea offered a composition of bold verticals meeting a horizontal expanse of water — shapes that suit his reductive style perfectly. This is one of several Hokkaido subjects in his output, the northern island providing landscapes of particular formal starkness.
