Description
Two egrets stand or move through a landscape of water and reeds — their pure white forms an almost abstract presence against whatever water, sky, or vegetation surrounds them. Shotei's kacho-e compositions featuring egrets were among his most elegant and formally refined, the birds' long-legged silhouettes and the clean lines of their breeding plumage providing a natural geometry that suited the woodblock medium's strength in sharp-edged forms. The egret's white feathers against darker surroundings created one of the most striking color contrasts available to the Japanese bird-and-flower tradition.
