Two figures travel by night in this composition — a night trip with all the associations of nocturnal movement: urgency, secrecy, the heightened sensation of moving through darkness. Night travel in Taisho culture carried specific meanings — the michiyuki (lovers' journey) of Kabuki and puppet theater, where two figures walk together toward their deaths, is the most charged version of nocturnal passage. Yumeji's night trip carries that theatrical and emotional weight, the darkness both literal and symbolic, the journey both destination and escape.
