Description
A farewell at the seaside — figure on the shore, the open water before her, another person or a vessel departing across the grey water — is the subject of this composition by Yumeji, the seaside farewell being among the most emotionally resonant of his recurring situations. The sea in Yumeji's world is the space of departure and the space of waiting: the woman on the shore watches someone leave, and the watching is an act of love as well as of loss. The horizon promises a return that the image quietly doubts.
