Description
Hashike damari — a pool or basin where barges were moored — was once a common feature of Kyoto's canal system, where flat-bottomed boats transported goods along the city's urban waterways. Tanaka's 1977 etching captures this working waterscape with characteristic sensitivity, the still water reflecting the hulls and surrounding architecture. The image documents a way of life already disappearing by the time he made it, giving the print the character of both observation and elegy.
