Description

Wachi In May returns Tanaka Ryohei to the Wachi district in late spring, when the rice paddies have been flooded and transplanting is under way and the deciduous trees are in fresh leaf. The seasonal title signals a deliberate revisit: Tanaka often recorded the same village across different months, treating the changing light and vegetation as a way to deepen rather than diversify his subject. The print likely shows thatched-roof minka set among new foliage, with the smooth water of paddies or the soft mass of leafed branches providing tonal contrast to the dense linework of the roofs. In etching, May light is typically rendered through restrained aquatint and reserved white of the paper rather than through any color. The image belongs to Tanaka's wider Wachi series and to his lifelong interest in the lived rhythm of the agricultural year in rural Kyoto.
