$1,000–$6,000. Common subjects: $1,000–$2,000. Key value factors: Tanaka's exquisite farmhouse etchings are beloved by collectors worldwide. Since his death in 2019, prices have firmed. Traditional thatched-roof subjects are most popular.
The secondhand bookstores of Kanda in Tokyo — a neighborhood that has been the center of Japan's book trade for over a century — are captured in this print from Tanaka's contribution to the series "One Hundred Views of Tokyo: Message to the 21st Century," produced between 1989 and 1995. The densely packed shopfronts of Jimbocho, with their overflowing shelves and hand-lettered signs, gave Tanaka a subject that combined his love of architectural texture with the specific material culture of urban intellectual life.
