$200–$1,500. Snow and night scenes tend to command premium prices for this artist. Key value factors: Kawashima's prints are affordably priced. Quality examples are most valued.
Okusaga, or inner Saga, refers to the deeper, more secluded reaches of the Sagano district on Kyoto's western edge. While the bamboo groves and main temple of Arashiyama draw crowds, the inner Saga area remains quieter, with narrow paths winding between old farmhouses, moss-covered stone walls, and dense stands of bamboo and cedar. Tatsuo Kawashima's color woodblock print from an edition of 100 shows this landscape in winter, when bare branches reveal the underlying structure of the terrain and snow accents the architectural forms. The Japanese subtitle "Fuyu no Okusaga" simply means "Winter in Okusaga," confirming the season and location. Edition number 72 of 100 places this among the later impressions. Kawashima's intimate knowledge of Kyoto's peripheral neighborhoods allowed him to find subjects in areas that most visitors never reach, recording landscapes of quiet, seasonal beauty.
