Description
The third in a group of standalone maiko portraits, this woodblock print continues Terashima Shimei's exploration of the apprentice geisha as a subject for printmaking. Each version offers an opportunity to depict different seasonal markers: spring maiko wear dangling cherry blossom ornaments, summer maiko carry round fans, and autumn maiko display chrysanthemum motifs in their hair. The repeated subject allowed Terashima to refine his technique with each new version, adjusting the balance between the figure and the surrounding space, the weight of line versus color field, and the degree of background detail. Collectors of [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) prints often sought multiple maiko images to display seasonally in their homes, rotating the prints in their tokonoma alcoves to match the time of year. This practice gave artists a practical reason to produce serial variations on the theme.
