Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
The fourth untitled woodblock print in this group, this work continues the pattern of Terashima Shimei compositions that have lost their original titles through the passage of time or incomplete record-keeping. In the shin-hanga publishing system, prints were often sold through department stores and print dealers who maintained their own inventories, and titles could vary between sources or be omitted entirely in some records. The print itself would exhibit the hallmarks of Terashima's bijin-ga practice: a female figure rendered with sensitivity to posture, expression, and costume, set within a composition that balances the figure's presence against carefully considered negative space. The woodblock medium's combination of crisp outlines and soft color transitions gives each impression a quality distinct from painting or photography.
