Key value factors: As self-carved and self-printed works, sosaku-hanga value is tied to the artist's reputation and edition size. Larger formats, earlier editions, and historically significant works command the highest prices.
A fifth untitled woodblock print attributed to Terashima Shimei, this work adds to the body of beauty portraits for which descriptive titles have not survived in cataloging records. The bijin-ga genre's emphasis on a single figure against a minimal background means that each print's identity rests largely on the specific details of the subject's appearance: which kimono she wears, how her hair is arranged, whether she holds an accessory like a fan, mirror, or comb. These details function as the print's visual signature even when a title is absent. Terashima's woodblock technique would have produced the fine gradations of tone and color that distinguish shin-hanga beauty prints from their Edo-period predecessors, particularly in the smooth, luminous skin tones that required the printer's most careful handling of dampened paper and pigment.
