Istanbul in July 2008 — this woodcut and silkscreen Diary entry captures a scene from Turkey's largest city during the height of summer. Made during the same international trip that produced the Israel entry from nine days later, this print shows Noda recording his travels across the eastern Mediterranean. Istanbul's layered architecture, minarets, waterfront bazaars, and Bosphorus views would have offered rich visual material. The woodcut-silkscreen combination processes the photographic source through carved wood surfaces, filtering a Turkish scene through Japanese printmaking tradition. Noda was sixty-eight when he made this print, still traveling and still adding daily entries to his decades-long visual project.
