Description
Part of Noda's long-running Diary series, this woodblock print takes an undated June 8 as its subject — a single day preserved through his characteristic fusion of photography and traditional mokuhanga technique. Noda typically begins each Diary entry by photographing a scene from his immediate environment, then transfers the photographic image to woodblocks through a labor-intensive tracing and carving process. The resulting print retains the spatial flatness and tonal gradations of the source photograph while acquiring the textural warmth of [washi](/glossary/washi) paper and hand-applied pigment. Works from the series often depict quiet domestic interiors, family members, or unremarkable outdoor settings, lending them an intimate, diaristic quality. The title functions as a timestamp rather than a descriptive label, positioning the image within a continuous autobiographical record that Noda has maintained since the 1960s. Subtle [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations are common across the series, softening edges in a manner consistent with traditional Japanese printmaking practice.
