Description

Created during a visit to Hangzhou, China, this November 2012 woodcut and silkscreen print documents an autumn day in the city famous for its West Lake. Hangzhou's November brings cool air, misty lake views, and the last of the autumn colors along the lakeside paths and tea plantations. Noda's international Diary entries show him applying the same observational practice to foreign cities that he used at home in Japan. The Chinese setting connects to deep cultural exchange — Hangzhou was historically admired by Japanese poets and painters. At seventy-two, Noda was still traveling and still adding dated entries to his ever-expanding visual archive.
