An early entry in the Diary series from November 1968, this woodblock and silkscreen print dates to the project's first years. The "#1" designation suggests it may be the first print linked to this specific date, or the first in a sub-numbered sequence. At this early stage, Noda was still inventing the Diary format — finding out what it meant to assign a calendar date to a printed image and to treat printmaking as a form of daily notation. The combined woodblock and silkscreen technique was innovative for 1968, placing Noda at the intersection of traditional Japanese craft and the photo-mechanical processes being explored by Pop artists internationally.
