$2,000–$20,000+. Common lithographs: $2,000–$5,000. Key value factors: As one of Japan's most celebrated modern artists who lived to 107, Shinoda's work has a large, devoted following. Original sumi paintings far exceed print prices.
Created during the Showa period in the 1970s, After Rain A is one of Shinoda's explorations of weather and aftermath rendered in woodblock. The title implies a world freshly washed, and the composition channels that stillness through spare, dark forms set against open space. Shinoda worked between woodblock and lithography throughout her career, and this print shows her comfort with the carved block's capacity for crisp edges and flat planes of ink. The rain has already passed when the image begins, leaving behind only its trace in the weight of the dark shapes and the surrounding quiet of untouched paper.
