Description
Bijin playing flute, documented through the [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e).org archive, depicts one of the most refined of [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) motifs: a beautiful woman absorbed in music. The flute, often a yokobue or shakuhachi, signals cultivation and inwardness, and the composition allows Tomioka Eisen to focus on the relationship between hand, instrument, and face. The motif has deep roots in the classical Japanese painting tradition, including the depiction of court ladies and entertainers in narrative scrolls, and it is one of the subjects through which Meiji bijin-ga maintained continuity with older painting traditions. The work shows Eisen working in a quieter register, prioritizing concentration and stillness over fashion display.
