Description
Bijin with Puppies, preserved through the [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e).org archive, places a beautiful woman alongside a playful detail beloved across the history of ukiyo-e: small dogs or puppies. The motif belongs to a popular sub-genre of [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) in which the beauty's pose is softened by a charming domestic detail — a kitten, a bird in a cage, or, as here, puppies tumbling at her feet. Such images carried strong commercial appeal in late ukiyo-e and Meiji print markets, where the warmth of the scene complemented the elegance of the figure. Tomioka Eisen's treatment fits this lineage and demonstrates the lighter, more accessible side of his bijin-ga practice.
