Beauties Under a Maple Tree is a 1779 woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga from the series A Collection of Contemporary Beauties of the Pleasure Quarters (Tosei yuri bijin awase), in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. The series surveys the women of the Edo pleasure quarters, treating them with the dignified, elongated figural style that Kiyonaga, as head of the Torii school, was bringing to maturity in this period. The maple tree in this sheet places the scene in late autumn, when leaves had turned but had not yet fallen, and the seasonal setting gives the design an additional layer of meaning beyond the identification of its subjects. The women are arranged in a relaxed group beneath the branches, their kimono coordinated by Kiyonaga into a sustained chord of color and pattern that reads coherently across the sheet. The Tosei yuri bijin awase series is significant in Kiyonaga's career because it allowed him to explore multi-figure compositions within a single, unified subject matter, anticipating the large polyptych [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) he would design in the following decade. The Art Institute of Chicago documents this impression among its Kiyonaga holdings, where it forms part of a series that has been studied for its insight into how Edo bijin-ga reconciled formal elegance with the documentation of specific pleasure-quarter women. The maple-tree setting reflects Kiyonaga's interest in integrating natural surroundings with his figures rather than treating them as detached portraits. For Torii school study, the print demonstrates how the workshop adapted its disciplined graphic language to subjects that were increasingly atmospheric.
