Description
One of Kotondo's most celebrated designs, Ame depicts a young woman caught in a summer shower, her face tilted slightly upward as rain falls against her skin. The composition is a close bust-length portrait characteristic of Kotondo's approach, eliminating background detail to concentrate attention on the figure's expression and the sheen of moisture on her cheek. Subtle [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations in the sky area create the humid, overcast atmosphere of a Tokyo rainstorm. The woman's kimono collar and loosely dressed hair suggest the informal ease of warm weather, a seasonal specificity typical of [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga). Published with a very limited edition, the print demonstrates Kotondo's mastery of delicate carving and the fine gradations achievable through careful [baren](/glossary/baren) pressure on [washi](/glossary/washi). The restrained palette — cool grays, pale skin tones, and muted textile color — heightens the contemplative mood.
