Kotondo's bijin-ga are prized for their psychologically intimate portrayals of modern Tokyo women. With only 21 designs and original woodblocks destroyed, all genuine 1930s impressions are scarce. Sotheby's estimated "Summer Geisha" at $8,000–$12,000 in 2023.
A woman walks in the rain, her umbrella held against the downpour, fine lines of rain drawn diagonally across the composition. Kotondo renders the rain through the traditional technique of fine printed lines over a dark ground, the bokashi at top conveying the heavy, wet atmosphere of a rainy day. The figure moves through the weather with composure, her kimono protected, her posture unperturbed — rain as backdrop for feminine grace rather than inconvenience. This 1929 print is among the most celebrated works from Kotondo's core bijin-ga output.
