Kotondo's bijin-ga are prized for their psychologically intimate portrayals of modern Tokyo women. With only 21 designs and original woodblocks destroyed, all genuine 1930s impressions are scarce. Sotheby's estimated "Summer Geisha" at $8,000–$12,000 in 2023.
A woman walks in the rain, her umbrella tilted against the downpour. The 1929 Rain print is among Kotondo's most celebrated and discussed bijin-ga designs, the diagonal lines of rainfall creating a rhythmic pattern that animates the composition. The woman's composure within the weather — not hurrying, not distressed — gives the image its characteristic quality of quiet self-possession. This version from the posthumous "12 Aspects of Women" series preserves the original design with fresh color printing.
