雨
Kotondo's bijin-ga are prized for their psychologically intimate portrayals of modern Tokyo women. With only 21 designs and original woodblocks destroyed, all genuine 1930s impressions are scarce. Sotheby's estimated "Summer Geisha" at $8,000–$12,000 in 2023.
A woman in a rain-soaked kimono clutches an umbrella against driving rain. The wet fabric clings to her form, revealing the contours of her body beneath, while her face shows a mixture of discomfort and determined grace. The diagonal lines of rain and the dark, saturated colors create an atmosphere of dramatic intensity unusual in bijin-ga.
