Kotondo is best known for bijin-ga, but his complete oeuvre includes actor prints and other figure subjects. His small corpus of only 21 designs ensures that all authenticated period impressions carry collector interest and scarcity premiums.
From the 1982 posthumous edition, this spring print depicts a woman in the season's particular quality of soft, diffuse light — the bokashi gradations warming from cool above to rose-tinged below, or dissolving into the haze of spring. The "12 Aspects of Women" series uses seasonal atmosphere as emotional context, and spring carries the associations of renewal, gentle warmth, and the brief beauty of blossoms. The figure is placed within this atmosphere as both observer and embodiment of the season.
