Such themes had a long pedigree in Japanese painting and print, where boating scenes by night, snow-covered shores, and aristocratic dress signaled a particular kind of refined sensibility easily linked with classical poetry. For a surimono commission, this combination of motifs offered the participating kyoka poets a rich vocabulary of associations from which to draw their verses, while giving Hokkei an opportunity to deploy the elegant figure types and controlled spatial design that defined his Hokusai school manner. Trained under Katsushika Hokusai, Hokkei specialized in surimono and produced numerous prints in which classical narrative or aristocratic subject matter was reinterpreted for early-nineteenth-century audiences.
