Description

A woman with dark hair swept up kneels barefoot on a green mat in the lower composition, wearing a pale blue-gray kimono patterned with dark blue star-bursts and lined in red, one hand pulling back a bamboo blind or curtain edged in orange and red. Beside her stand a round green wickerwork lamp and a black lacquered stand holding round objects on a woven tray, set against a shaded gray-black wall with a wood-lattice door behind. A framed inset panel above shows a separate scene of a robed figure with a boy attendant beside a garden pond with rocks and pine branches, accompanied by vertical Japanese text; this print, "Koko (Huang Xiang)" by Toyohara Chikanobu, 1890, is a woodblock print.
