Kyoshi (Jiang Shi)

Kyoshi (Jiang Shi), 1890 — woodblock print by Toyohara Chikanobu. A woman with long, loose black hair sits on a green-and-yellow bamboo bench beside a pond, wearing a purple, red, and white kimono patterned with large chrysanthemums and holding a round red fan. Beside her a bare-legged boy in a checked sleeveless robe kneels at the water's edge working a net through the pond, where red and white koi and lily pads are visible; a small landscape vignette with a seated woman on a veranda appears in a bordered strip across the top of the sheet.
