A print recording miscellaneous events of the early Meiji period — a documentary work preserving specific occasions, ceremonies, or events from the years immediately following the Meiji Restoration of 1868. The "shoshi nenkai kiji" (miscellaneous annual events records) format captured the density of the period's transformations: within any given year of the early Meiji era, Japan was simultaneously abolishing feudal domains, adopting Western institutions, changing the calendar, altering dress and diet, and reorganizing its military.
