Description

A dense battle scene shows Japanese infantry in dark uniforms with rifles and fixed bayonets charging up a hillside toward entrenched troops, with a large rising-sun flag flying at the composition's center and smaller flags dotting the ridge behind it. Fallen soldiers lie among the rocks and green foliage of the slope in the foreground, while the background shows soldiers firing amid smoke and a distant coastline. The palette is dominated by earthy browns and greens with accents of red (uniform trim, flags) and blue-grey, rendered in the multi-panel horizontal format typical of Meiji-era war print triptychs; this woodblock print, "The Fall of Jinzhou" by Toyohara Chikanobu, is undated.
