Domyoji is a Meiji woodblock print by Tsukioka Kogyo, published in 1893 in Pictures of No Performances (Nogaku Zue). The play takes its name from a temple in Kawachi province and dramatizes the devotion of an old woman whose prayers to Kannon reunite her with a long-lost grandson. The narrative ends with a sacred dance acknowledging the bodhisattva's compassion. Kogyo, a pupil of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and Ogata Gekko, brings the spare visual idiom of noh-e to this devotional subject. The composition follows the conventions of the noh stage: a low ground line, near-empty background and concentrated attention on the costumed figure. The keyblock outline preserves the silhouette of the long robe and the meditative posture, while overprinted brocade patterns and selective [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations replicate the textiles of the karaori robe with the precision typical of late Meiji woodblock production. A muted palette of indigo, ochre and pale gold conveys the gravity of the scene without overwhelming the figure. Kogyo's documentary precision derived from direct access to performances at the [Hosho](/glossary/hosho) and Kanze schools during the Meiji noh revival - a deliberate effort to rebuild the repertoire after the dislocations of the Restoration. Pictures of No Performances, issued by Matsuki Heikichi, was the prelude to One Hundred No Dramas and established the visual conventions he would refine for two decades. The Art Institute of Chicago holds this impression as part of its substantial Kogyo holdings. Source: Art Institute of Chicago (https://www.artic.edu/artworks/155310).
