Eguchi is a Meiji woodblock print by Tsukioka Kogyo from his 1893 series Pictures of No Performances (Nogaku Zue), preserved in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. The play Eguchi centers on the spirit of a courtesan who appears to a traveling monk near the port of Eguchi, and the noh repertoire treats the figure with a meditative blend of beauty and impermanence. Kogyo's print mirrors that quality: the central figure stands or kneels in formal stage costume, the patterned robe articulated through fine line and disciplined color, with the surrounding space pared back so the actor's stance and mask convey the play's spiritual register. As a pupil of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and Ogata Gekko, Kogyo developed a noh-e style that balanced [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) draftsmanship with the restraint demanded by classical theater, and Eguchi demonstrates that synthesis convincingly. The Nogaku Zue series is a touchstone of Meiji noh-e, valued both as a documentary record of the noh repertoire and as a sustained achievement in woodblock design, with each sheet preserving the conventions of mask, costume, and gesture that experienced theatergoers expected. The Art Institute of Chicago documents the impression at https://www.artic.edu/artworks/155317, placing it within a substantial museum holding of Kogyo's noh prints. For collectors, Eguchi offers a strong example of how Tsukioka Kogyo turned a contemplative noh play into a refined Meiji woodblock print attentive to both its iconography and its emotional weight.
