Kiyotsune is a Meiji woodblock print by Tsukioka Kogyo, published in 1893 in Pictures of No Performances (Nogaku Zue). The play recounts the spirit of Taira no Kiyotsune, a warrior who drowned himself after the Heike defeats in the Genpei War; he returns to his wife to explain his choice, recite his final moments and seek release through prayer. Kogyo, trained under Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and Ogata Gekko, brings the spare visual idiom of noh-e to this melancholy subject. The composition adheres to noh conventions: a low ground line, sparse setting and emphatic concentration on the costumed figure. The keyblock outline preserves the warrior's silhouette and posture, while overprinted lacing and brocade patterns recreate his costume with the precision typical of late Meiji woodblock production. A subdued palette of muted indigo, gray and small accents of vermilion conveys the gravity of the second-category warrior play without melodrama. Kogyo's documentary authority came from his unusual access to Meiji performances at the [Hosho](/glossary/hosho) and Kanze schools during the deliberate noh revival of the period. Pictures of No Performances, issued by Matsuki Heikichi, was his first dedicated noh series and the prelude to the monumental One Hundred No Dramas. Together these projects form the most ambitious printed record of late nineteenth-century noh and helped re-anchor the repertoire in the cultural life of modern Tokyo. The Art Institute of Chicago holds this impression as part of its substantial Kogyo holdings. Source: Art Institute of Chicago (https://www.artic.edu/artworks/155320).
