Shun'ei is a Meiji woodblock print designed by Tsukioka Kogyo in 1893 for the series Pictures of No Performances (Nogaku Zue), a foundational body of noh-e (noh theater prints) held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. The image distills a single moment from the noh stage, where stylized gesture, formal robes, and the bare wooden platform of the noh theater carry the entire weight of the drama. Kogyo trained under Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and Ogata Gekko, two masters who shaped his ability to balance traditional [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) draftsmanship with the disciplined restraint demanded by noh subjects, and that hybrid sensibility is fully visible in this sheet. The figure is rendered with the controlled stillness for which noh is famous, the masked face oriented forward and the costume articulated through carefully calibrated patterns and color blocks, with the background pared back so nothing distracts from the actor's stance. As a member of the Nogaku Zue series, the print belongs to the project that effectively defined noh-e as a Meiji woodblock genre and made these performances legible to viewers who might never see them staged. Kogyo's accuracy in robe identification, mask choice, and posture turned the series into a working reference for theatergoers as well as a collectible artwork. The Art Institute of Chicago documents the sheet at https://www.artic.edu/artworks/155361, anchoring it within a major museum holding of Kogyo's noh prints. For collectors, Shun'ei is a representative example of how Tsukioka Kogyo translated a centuries-old stage tradition into the modern woodblock print, preserving the gravity of noh while showcasing the technical refinement of late nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking.
