Also from the 2014 '8 Scenes to Mt. Fuji' series, this print treats Fuji in its geological rather than its scenic aspect — as an active volcano rather than a serene landmark. Volcanic eruption was depicted in Edo-period woodblock prints, most dramatically in some of Hokusai's views, and the subject allows for dynamic compositional treatment: billowing ash, pyroclastic color, and the mountain's silhouette disrupted by eruptive force. In mokuhanga, graduated [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) can build the dense, turbulent masses of smoke and ash that erupt imagery demands, while the water-based pigments' natural translucency captures the way light filters through particulate atmosphere. Within a series that presents Fuji across multiple conditions, 'Fuji Eruption' establishes the mountain as a force rather than a fixture, emphasizing the same tension between beauty and danger that runs through Japanese cultural attitudes toward the volcano.
