The third entry from the 2014 '8 Scenes to Mt. Fuji' series, this print depicts the mountain at dawn, a temporal vantage that allows Moilanen to explore the characteristic quality of early light on snow and stone. Morning light on Fuji — pink, orange, and cold gray transitioning as the sun rises — suits mokuhanga's layered color application, where successive block impressions build the tonal complexity of an evolving sky. In the tradition of Japanese landscape prints, time of day is frequently conveyed through sky treatment and the play of light across landmark topography; Hiroshige's series employed just such temporal variation to differentiate scenes. The [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) framework of famous-place prints underlies the series, but Moilanen's Finnish identity complicates the insider relationship to this most iconic of Japanese views, producing a morning scene that is simultaneously a sincere engagement with the tradition and a cross-cultural encounter with a foreign landscape.
