Description
This undated Winter Landscape, preserved in a German private-collection impression now distributed via Wikimedia Commons, is among the most atmospheric of Uehara Konen's snow compositions. The print depicts a quiet rural valley under heavy snow, with a small cluster of farmhouses at the middle distance, a low stand of bare trees in the foreground, and a single faint mountain silhouette in the distance. The composition is dominated by the cream of the unprinted [washi](/glossary/washi) standing for snow on the roofs, the ground, and the upper slopes of the distant mountain, with the keyblock work reserved for the dark gable contours of the houses, the trunks of the bare trees, and a few precise lines establishing the path through the snow. The palette is reduced to two or three tones — the cream of the snow, a soft grey of the overcast sky, and a darker charcoal for the trees and roof lines — and the temperature of the composition is carried entirely by chromatic restraint. The Wikimedia impression descends from a small group of Konen designs that circulated in German private collections in the 1920s and 1930s, distributed there through the network of European dealers who specialized in [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) material for the Continental market. The print exemplifies Konen's quiet, observational approach to the winter landscape.
