From an ancient Japanese roof tile, a mounted horse and rider in full gallop — an image of movement arrested by the tile's compact circular frame. Hiratsuka's 1935 woodblock transcription enlarges the tile's incised design into a self-contained composition, the horse's energy amplified by the surrounding emptiness of the printed ground.
