$500–$8,000. Common later works: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: His enormous output (lived to 102) means most works are accessible. Early black-and-white prints are most valued.
The locks of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal — the stone-walled chambers that once raised and lowered boats along the Potomac valley — are rendered in Hiratsuka's 1963 woodblock as industrial heritage. The canal had ceased operating in 1924, and by the time Hiratsuka lived nearby it was a preserved historical waterway. His print treats the lock mechanism's stone masonry with the same formal attention he gave to Japanese castle walls.
