Description
A portrait of a Western woman named Lillian — rendered in Hiratsuka's early woodcut style from around 1925 — represents his engagement with Western figure subjects during the early sosaku-hanga period. The print's direct carving gives the subject a bold presence that differs markedly from the softened beauty of shin-hanga portrait conventions. The identity of "Madam Lillian" is not recorded.
